A tradition is a special ritual shared by
a group of people. Families and groups of friends practice traditions
throughout the year. These traditions might have to do with holidays,
celebrations, food, the season, or quirky family practices that have been
passed down from generation to generation. Describe at least one tradition that
you share with your family or friends.
To be honest my family doesn’t really have a lot of holiday traditions, most of them are newer and pretty stupid. We have obvious ones like eating together on holidays. I guess one, which is pretty popular in the US is that on Thanksgiving my brother and I always break the wishbone, and the person that gets the bigger piece gets more pie or whatever prize my family sees fit. This has gotten lost since my two sisters and my cousins were born. Before that, Nate and I always fought over it because we wanted good luck and all that jazz. On Christmas Nate and I pass out presents to everyone in the family. We call ourselves Santa’s elves, which is pretty lame, but we’ve done it for a long time. Nate will pass out a present while someone opens the one I passed out. Because Nate is an idiot, or perhaps it makes him a genius, he always searches through all the presents to find the ones with his name on them and leaves everyone else to wait for their presents until the end of the morning. We also have an elf on the shelf that we put out and he “flies back to Santa” every night and then moves around the house until Christmas, where he flies back to the North Pole until December of the next year.

These traditions might have to do with the holidays, celebrations, food, the season, or quirky family practices that have been passed down from generation to generation. Describe at least one tradition that you share with your family or friends. During the Christmas season we all go to my aunts house on Christmas Eve for dinner and we play games and have a good time. Everyone exchanges some presents and we play rob your neighbor. The next day we go to my grandma’s house for dinner and more gifts. We hangout all afternoon and evening. My cousin from California fly in to town for the holiday and spend a week or two with us. The entire week we spend almost every day together :((((( going to different things around the city, getting food and going bowling, or to a museum, or many different things.
ReplyDeleteMy family doesn't have any big traditions we celebrate yearly. It's pretty much always to be determines whose house we'll celebrate Christmas at or eat Thanksgiving dinner at. Most of the time there are a bunch of small get together at a few houses, and people just make their rounds.
ReplyDeleteOne tradition I share with my family is Thanksgiving Day. One Thanksgiving Day me and my brothers always go play football at the park. We play a few games with each other. When we get home, my mom is usually done with the food. We watch the National Football League’s Thanksgiving Day games. We eat a small amount, then we pack everything up. We go to my grandma’s house and eat with the rest of my family at her house.
ReplyDeleteA tradition in our family is that on christmas day our whole family goes to see a movie. Usually my aunt Jan takes us around 12 pm. Often times it’s just the younger kids that go on this movie trip because the old ones like to stay home on christmas and sleep all day. This tradition is one that has not been going on very long but I feel that it will stick around for a while. This year I imagine we will do the same thing.
ReplyDeleteMy family usually celebrate this thing at my church called Warfare. We usually start it late October and ends in late December. We usually dress in camouflage.
ReplyDeleteWhy do you dress in camouflage?
DeleteA tradition that my family has is to never start a new year with a dirty house. Every year, around christmas time, we have to make sure the house is in good shape and spotless. Come January 1, 2013, the house should look as if we just moved into it. Another tradition my family has is, at the beginning of every year, always have money in your pocket. We believe that it is a good luck kind of thing. It means that, if you have money in your pocket starting a new year, then you will always have money for the rest of that year.
ReplyDeleteA tradition in my family is our annual attendance to ‘Shakespeare in the Park’ in the summer. We always go to Shop N Save to buy a bag of fried chicken and juice to eat before the production and, I think, that when I was young, I appreciated Shakespeare more because of the associated meal than because of his prowess with words. Of course, that has changed now... I think.

ReplyDeleteJosef, when I was in Marrakesh (several days after we visited your school), some of our group had henna put on their arms, but it was just for tourists -- no one was getting married! But I am curious -- do you know what the henna symbolizes for the bride? And for the other wedding participants?
